Gardening for sustainability

Gardening for sustainability

Growing your own fruit and vegetables eliminates supermarket food miles, packaging and processing and reduces energy in refrigeration. Growing fruit and vegetables organically also eliminates emissions associated with fertilizer and pesticide manufacture and distribution. The food’s also fresh and delicious!

A group of enthusiastic gardeners visit each others’ gardens, share plants, seeds and advice! Visits are monthly during the growing season, normally the first Sunday of the month.

In collaboration with the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, LCH coordinated the planting by children from Windmill Primary School of community apple trees in the little garden at the end of Gardiner Street.

Discussing the nitty gritty

We are currently collecting a list to match people who need help to work their gardens with frustrated gardeners who don’t have their own land to work on. Contact: Kathy if you fall into either group.
